The most in-demand skills in the new normal

The most in-demand skills in the new normal

Every social inflection sows uncertainty in each of the people who live it and suffer or enjoy it. Each small turn can affect the daily lives of many people and much more do disruptions, those changes that completely fracture, for better or worse, processes, sectors or even society as a whole.

In a globalized world like the one we live in, any change is very noticeable in a kind of butterfly effect that starts from a small place on the planet and quickly expands to every corner.

Until recently, the big disruptions came from technology: computing, personal computers, smartphones, tablets...were changes that, at times, were difficult for us to accept, but they had "good intentions."

Currently, the disruption is not digital, but health, and It is the opportunity for technology to help us instead of “complicating our lives,” as we felt sometimes happened before.

In this new era, however long it lasts, which we hope will be short, It will be technology that helps us not only to survive, but to gain quality of life.

Therefore, most of the most in-demand competencies in the “new normal” are digital competencies or skills..

And, no, make no mistake, These skills are not only valid for the workplace., although it is the main one that usually worries us. Let's look at some cases:

  • Take advantage of your smartphone It is something that many people have been learning since March, from the possibility of seeing their loved ones away due to restrictions and confinements, to the ability to manage a business from home because the office is closed.
  • Use project management tools, such as Asana or Trello, is proving vital for managing projects and is even ensuring that we do not miss the long meetings in the office, although we miss a little for our colleagues and the mid-morning coffee.
  • The virtual meetings and webinars They are replacing work meetings, university classes and even dinners with friends. Dinners with friends may be greatly missed, but online work meetings and virtual classes are making our lives a lot easier. And till has managed to unite us with more work teams  and has achieved create educational communities stronger than ever. And having to go to a workshop at 6:00 p.m. and look for parking so as not to be late is not the same as being able to watch a webinar quietly from home and being able to talk face to face (digitally) with your colleagues.

Are you clear now what we mean by making our lives easier? It is clear that there is still a pandemic out there, but there are many of us who are more secure working from our homes, comfortably, even saving time and without ceasing to be connected with collaborators, family and friends.

Do we miss the “old normal”? Of course, but all the experts are clear that, when the pandemic is over, many of the skills that involve the activities we have talked about and many others will continue to be used because there are “comforts” that we are no longer going to abandon (and that employers will continue to value). Let's look at the most important competencies we talked about:

  • Empathy and active listening in digital communication: Understanding each other, even if we see their faces on a screen.
  • Remote collaboration: In relation to the previous one, working as a team without being in the same room.
  • Creativity: Lately, the solutions are not the same as always and you have to have "spark."
  • Imaginative use of digital technology: A smartphone can be a thousand times more useful than a heavy desktop computer if you know how to take advantage of it.
  • Information and device security: Now we don't have the IT department in front of us to clean up our messes, so we have to be more careful than ever.
  • Productivity and project management: Losing focus is very easy at home and you have to remedy it.
  • Marketing/Communication on social networks/E-commerce management: Remember that marketing can help us all, since we are all ambassadors of our company, regardless of our job.
